In His first lecture to His disciples, Jesus challenged them: “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world” (Matt. 5:13-14). Jesus’ words call Christians to impact the world as salt and light do. Salt seasons, preserves, heals, and creates thirst. Light reveals and clarifies, making everything visible and understood. Through these roles, Jesus describes the essential difference Christians are called to make in the world.
The challenge was, however, striking: Jesus’ disciples were ordinary people in a society dominated by a privileged few. Still, Jesus told them they were the sustainers of society, even if the rest of society considered them irrelevant. This message is unchanged for us today. Regardless of our status, we are called to enhance, sustain, and preserve the world. If we do not act, the world will decay.
How do we fulfill this calling? It comes down to capacity and strategy. We build quality—our “salt” content—then intentionally apply it to our surroundings, just as salt is applied to food. ‘Halas’ means salt in Greek.
