Resilience

For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again… (Proverbs 24:16).

The three elements in this text are:

  • A righteous man
  • An unfortunate experience
  • A triumphant outcome

This individual faces challenges yet ultimately thrives.

Let’s see the flip side of this in another text:

If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small (Proverbs 24:10).

The three components in this text are:

  • An individual
  • An adversity
  • A possible defeat

A person who gives up during adversity is considered to have limited strength.

In the study of human behavior, the cause-and-effect theory explains how events lead to outcomes. In this context, your life is the cause. Its result—whether good or bad, successful or not, fulfilled or unfulfilled—is the effect. Adversity is the common cause in both examples. However, the effects differ: one person rises, the other falls. The difference between these outcomes is resilience. Resilience is the human capacity to overcome adversity and thrive.

  • Your vision is the preview of your future.
  • Your gift is your tool to actualize your vision.
  • Your resilience is the mental skill to navigate the hurdles in your path and thrive.

Psychologists and behavioral scientists describe resilience as “bouncing back,” “the tennis ball effect,” and “elasticity.” While the terminology varies, the goal remains the same: to thrive in the face of adversity.
